The concept of autonomous basis of coordinates (ABC) and its use in determining positions in space-time

Historical concepts used to define systems of coordinates will be reviewed, together with discoveries made by realizations that "fixed coordinates" can be considered as such only within a level of precision to which dynamics is understood. The proposed ABC system is based on dynamics of freely falling bodies and light in the local gravitational field. It is dynamically self consistent, and the coordinates traced by light rays can be unambiguously transformed in any other coordinates in which the metric of space-time is described. It thus provides a platform for building up the precision of the local space-time metric and can, if implemented, dramaticaly increrease the accuracy of description of our space-time.
